You win some, you lose some.

Boris is out as editor the Spectator (resigned)…

and in as Shadow Higher Education Secretary.

Looks like his admission that he voting Cameron out of naked self-interest has done him no harm at all.

Suddenly Education Questions in the House may become worth watching although, unlike the Beeb, I’m not sure I’d consider Higher Education Secretary a front bench job as he’ll still be number two to ‘Two Brains’ Willetts.

  1. As I’ve suggested in Matthew Turner’s comments, I think these events are coincidental, rather than related. The Barclays may be less good as proprietors than Conrad Black was, and the Sextator has acquired an unwanted image in the past year and a bit. Leaving may be a good move, and he’s hardly taking the brave plunge into unemployment.

Owning up to naked self-interest is always a plus with me: far better than lying about it. It moves most of us, whether we admit it or not. (I used to be the kind of lefty who believed that if voters voted with their wallets, we’d never see a right-wing party in power.)

First question for a shadow higher education minister: does http://education.guardian.co.uk/higher/news/story/0,9830,1663817,00.html the break-up of the University of London matter? If so, is it a good thing or a bad thing? And is it the government’s fault?
